Areas of specialism: sport, psychology, male celebrity, real life stories. Combines a strong journalistic background with the understanding and empathy of a practicing psychotherapist.
John joined The Times in 1973, working initially as a sports sub-editor and then section editor and writer. He left in 1986 to join The Independent, and in 1990 joined The Sunday Times as a columnist. In 1998 he left to concentrate on writing books and developing his career as a psychotherapist and now runs his own successful practice in Kingston upon Thames in parallel to his career as a writer.
John has had four books published: Lester - Return Of A Legend (Headline, 1992), a biography of the 11 times champion jockey, Lester Piggott; Frankie Dettori, The Illustrated Biography (Headline, 1995), a profile of the charismatic Italian-born rider; On Training To Be A Therapist (Open University Press, 2002), which offers a 'student's eye' view of the complex psychological and emotional issues involved in training as a psychotherapist; and The Profit (Roastbooks, 2009), whose principal character, an arrogant tycoon, uses reverse psychology to provide telling insights into today's 'me' society. He is currently writing The Psychology of Relationships for Icon's “Introducing ...” Series.
John has taught creative writing classes at Esher College and also delivered writing workshops for Richmond Council.
He was featured in a Channel Four Documentary called Sex Bomb, which examined the sexual revolution in the sixties and seventies. He was also part of a panel discussing relationships for a women's radio programme and he has been interviewed for various other programmes on TV and Radio.
